My name is Josh VanBrakle, and I'm a forester in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York. What's a forester? In a nutshell, my job is to learn as much as I can about forests and then share those experiences with as many people as possible. It's my hope that the more I can share about forests, the more excited folks will be to protect and care for these amazing places.
I have a B.A. in Environmental Economics from Lebanon Valley College, and an M.S. in Natural Resource Management from the State University of New York - College of Environmental Science and Forestry. Since 2010, I've worked for a non-profit, non-governmental organization, the Watershed Agricultural Council. My work with that group inspired me to write a simple, practical, jargon-free guidebook for woodland owners: Backyard Woodland: How to Maintain and Sustain Your Trees, Water, and Wildlife. The book is published by Countryman Press, an imprint of W.W. Norton & Company.
Aside from my forestry work, I enjoy hiking, kayaking, nature photography, and in general being outdoors wherever and whenever possible. I'm also the author of the independently published YA fantasy book series The Dragoon Saga. I'm joined in these adventures by my wife, daughter, and our ill-behaved cat.
